How to Turn a Reality Show Gig into A Multi-Million Dollar Business

Bethenny Frankel appeared as an original cast member on the BRAVO show The Real Housewives of New York City and 4 years later show launched her company SkinnyGirl Cocktails in 2009. Two years later, in April of 2011, Frankel sold her SkinnyGirl cocktail brand to Fortune Brand’s Beam Global for an estimated 120 million dollars.

Opportunity. It comes to us each day but unfortunately many of us are not ready to take advantage of that opportunity when it comes. Have you ever looked at those that are rich and or famous and thought to yourself, ‘They’re really lucky’? I hope I’m not the first to inform you, but if I am, so be it. Luck is rare. Think about it. How many times have you ever stumbled upon a million dollars laying on the street? Or falling out of the sky? Luck is something that comes to those ready to accept it.

“Luck is where preparation meets opportunity. ” ― Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

You have to be prepared to accept what is meant for you. Yes, I do believe that you have something very special just for you, but it requires hard work and dedication. Each day as you put in the work required, you will be able to see more and more opportunities. Here is an example from one of my favorite books, The Richest Man in Babylon. In it, one of the characters wonders if there is a way to attract the goddess of good luck. He relates a tale of how a neighbor became rich. At first the character thought that his neighbor was just lucky, but after discussing it with others; he realizes that his neighbor was ready to take advantage of the opportunities that came his way because the neighbor had the money saved to participate in the investments that had made him fat.

Some may say that Bethenny Frankel is lucky to have been selected to appear on the Real Housewives shows and later start a business but if you take a look at her biography, you’ll see that she already had been putting the pieces in place to take advantage of the opportunities that came her way. She started appearing in short films in 1993 and attended the National Gourmet Institute for Healthy and Culinary Arts in New York. I’m sure that helped when she began to develop her SkinnyGirl line of cocktails. Before she even made it into the living rooms of housewives everywhere, she showed her business acumen by winning first runner-up on NBC’s “The Apprentice: Martha Stewart.”

So you see, it’s not just being in the right place at the right time. You also have to be able to recognize what the right time is and where to go. You have to start putting those pieces into place now to get where you want to be in life. Success is yours if you will just put in the hard work.

Do you see luck in the same way? What are your stories of opportunity coming to you?

Opportunities are out there all the time, but either we don’t recognize them or we don’t know what to do with them. More opportunities seem to appear when you associate yourself with the right people. You know other successful people.

It truly is the network that you have that can propel you to where you want to be. There are so many people trying to do it on their own but with the right network you can reach your goals so much easier and faster.

I agree! Being successful is not about luck, it is
all about being ready to grab an opportunity when it comes your way. You
must work very hard to reach your goals and become successful. In my
opinion, it is always good to map out your career path and set your
goals high to always keep you challenged.

Yep! I’ve been working with the goal of being CEO for a while now. It pushes me to give 120% in whatever I do because I have that challenge in the back of my mind all the time.

This is SUCH a great success. And incredible actually. I invested in a gin company 6 years ago, and it is still trudging along. I hope it gets sold for big bucks so I can finally cash out!

    • LaTisha Styles

Yeah, she really made the most of an opportunity. Good luck with that! I know sometimes private investments take a while before the ‘liquidity event’ occurs.
